Ending child poverty

Our country’s recent political reset presents an opportunity to tackle one of the biggest blights on Aotearoa New Zealand society: longstanding child poverty and its resulting intergenerational effects.

When up to 30% of children do not have their basic needs met, the nation must come together to find meaningful and lasting solutions.

In an op-ed that featured in the Press, Post and Waikato Times, Dr Felicia Low and Dr Johan Morreau advocate cross-party acknowledgement of the enormity of the challenges and the importance of the solutions, as well as a long-term, whole-of-government and public service commitment to the solutions.

It follows the release of their new evidence brief, Early investment: A key to reversing intergenerational disadvantage and inequity in Aotearoa New Zealand, which calls for greater public investment in the earliest stages of the lives of our children.
