Sir Peter Gluckman today congratulated Dr John Roche on his appointment as New Zealand’s Chief Science Advisor to the Prime Minister.
“John is a respected scientist and experienced advisor who brings deep understanding of research, science and evidence-informed policy and I know he will bring wisdom and clarity to this important role,” Sir Peter said.
Sir Peter held the role as the inaugural Chief Science Advisor to the Prime Minister from 2009 – 2019.
Sir Peter also expressed his appreciation at being appointed to the Prime Minister’s Science, Technology and Innovation Council (PMSTIAC), which will support government efforts to strengthen the country’s research and innovation system.
“Science and innovation underpin economic growth, and social and environmental prosperity and health, and I am delighted to contribute to this group and to support the development of a more strategic approach to research and innovation in Aotearoa New Zealand,” he said.
The establishment of the Prime Minister’s Science, Technology and Innovation Advisory Council (PMSTIAC) was a core recommendation of the Science System Advisory Group’s first report, chaired by Sir Peter and released in January 2025
