Koi Tū Director Sir Peter Gluckman has joined Aurecon’s Engineering Reimagined podcast to discuss the role of science and engineering in addressing complex global challenges.
In this episode, Sir Peter covers the importance of maintaining public trust in science as AI changes how knowledge is created and geopolitical tensions place increasing pressure on international scientific collaboration.
He argues that addressing complex challenges requires scientists and engineers who can work across disciplines, apply systems thinking and understand the wider social context in which science and technology operate.
“I think all scientists need to be able to reach beyond their narrow discipline and understand the context in which they’re operating and where they want to make a contribution,” Sir Peter says, speaking to Tanya de Hoog, Aurecon’s Chief Engineering Eminence and Innovation Officer.
The discussion also explores the importance of science literacy, the relationship between scientific expertise and policymaking, and the need to protect science as an open and trustworthy global endeavour.
The episode was recorded at the 2025 conference of the International Council of Academies of Engineering and Technological Sciences in Brisbane.
