Koi Tū welcomes many of the findings from the inquiry into the harms of social media for young people.
In response to Parliament’s education and workforce select committee report, published today, Koi Tū Director Sir Peter Gluckman says he is pleased to see the recommendations that support educating and empowering parents, caregivers and young people; and promoting New Zealand-based research.
“We are heartened to see an emphasis on the need for comprehensive resources and education to inform parents, caregivers, and young people on online safety, and the importance of these resources being developed with and for young people and families in Aotearoa New Zealand,” he says.
Koi Tū’s work on rapid technological change and its impacts on society highlights the need for an approach that is adaptive and focused on supporting young people’s agency and building resilience as they navigate a dynamic online environment.
“Even if an age restriction for social media is introduced, there is still a great need for ongoing support and resources to be accessible for young people and whānau to navigate the complexities of the online environment and life in a digital age.”
