Koi Tū director Sir Peter Gluckman was acknowledged as an Honorary Fellow for his vision and initiative in establishing the Pacific Academy of Sciences, launched in Apia today.

This new Academy promotes the study and application of natural and social sciences, humanities, indigenous knowledge, and technology, aimed at benefiting the Pacific Islands region and beyond. Prime Minister of Samoa, Hon. Fiame Dr Naomi Mata’afa, officially inaugurated the Academy and welcomed its twelve Foundation Fellows, as well as Sir Peter (who is pictured below). The Academy will help curate knowledge and scientific evidence to inform public policy and foster a thriving Pacific Islands community.
Professor Teatulohi Matainaho, newly appointed President of the Pacific Academy of Sciences, underscored the Academy’s potential to support young scientists by providing mentorship and fostering connections both regionally and globally. Prime Minister Mata’afa expressed her congratulations to the Foundation Fellows, recognising their historic opportunity to advance scientific discourse in the Pacific. The establishment of the Academy has been supported by the National University of Samoa and various international partners.
