The Government has released the University Advisory Group (UAG) interim and final report and its formal response today.

Koi Tū Director Sir Peter Gluckman, who chaired the UAG, said the principles behind the group’s recommendations are well recognised in their response.

Sir Peter recommended the interim and final report be read together as the first is more strategic and the second is more operationally focused.

The Advisory Group’s work was a major collective effort over the past 18 months. Sir Peter acknowledged the contributions of the panel members, and emphasised that officials must now focus on the many areas requiring more detailed work towards implementation including governance, qualifications and compliance, and the design of a simpler system to replace the Performance-Based Research Fund (PBRF).

“Core to our recommendations was to see the eight universities strategically as more of a system and a strategic asset, collaborating for access and focused on more differentiation for quality. The interim report details the critical importance of a robust university system to New Zealand.”

Koi Tū provided the secretariat support for the University Advisory Group.
