AI experts put forward the Manhattan Declaration

Koi Tū director Sir Peter Gluckman is pleased to participate and sign the Manhattan Declaration on Inclusive Global Scientific Understanding of Artificial Intelligence after a High-level meeting at the United Nations General Assembly. The declaration recognises the urgent need for a shared global understanding of AI capabilities, opportunities, and risks.

On September 22 2024, after the high-level meeting “Towards a Common Understanding of AI Capabilities, Opportunities, and Risks: Forging the Path for a Positive Future for All”, held at United Nations (UN) headquarters during the 79th session of the UN General Assembly (UNGA), 21 AI researchers and policy experts signed the Manhattan Declaration, edicting 10 principles for the  development and governance of artificial intelligence.

The ten principles include:

  • Long- and near-term perspectives 
  • Global scientific cooperation
  • Assessment of capabilities and mitigation of AI risks
  • Fostering AI as a global public good
  • Inclusive participation
  • Transparent research and risk assessment
  • Interdisciplinary approach
  • Responsible development, deployment, and use
  • Support for governance initiatives
  • Public engagement
